Les Beehive - Bo and Su answer your love and sex questions!
Do you think it’s necessary to come out? I’m debating on whether it would be “wrong” not to tell someone in that big speech way, I’ve always felt that I’ve done because it’s expected, but is it ok wanting to keep sexuality private, or is it selfish?
Bo: I think you need to first explore why you don’t want to come out, especially if it’s to a specific person. Often coming out is a very intimate, personal interaction with another person, and if you feel you can’t trust them or that they’ll treat you differently after you come out, that is something to consider. I don’t believe it’s wrong to judge whether or not coming out to someone you work with or interact with casually is worth it, I don’t even think it’s necessary to come out to family members or old friends if you’re not close. The people you must be honest and open with are the people you love who you can trust and will accept and love you. I don’t think you should let someone’s small mindedness or bigotry keep you from coming out if you want to, but I do think it’s fine to judge each person individually and go from there. When and if you do come out is your decision and yours alone, if it doesn’t feel right, don’t do it. But through it all, remain sure and proud, don’t ever let shame contribute to your decision.
