Only Vivienne, one of her and Brad Pitt’s youngest children, proved not to be scared by the intimidating black horns and icy cackle. The now-5-year-old even ended up playing a young version of Princess Aurora in the film (as seen in this exclusive new image). But that casting was done more out of necessity than ambition.
“We think it’s fun for our kids to have cameos and join us on set, but not to be actors. That’s not our goal for Brad and I at all,” Jolie says. “But the other 3- and 4-year-old [performers] wouldn’t come near me. It had to be a child that liked me and wasn’t afraid of my horns and my eyes and my claws. So it had to be Viv.”

Angelina Jolie receives the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the 2013 Governors Awards.
Absolutely beautiful tribute to refugees, her mother and her family. Brad and Maddox looked so proud. This whole thing made me cry.

Maleficent is the one of the live-action-older-actress-with-young-up-and-coming-actress-fairy-tale movies that are trending right now – think Snow White and the Huntsman, Mirror Mirror and the upcoming Cinderella film starring Cate Blanchett as the Stepmother. Casting Angelina Jolie is a no brainer, for the evil queen in the Disney version of Sleeping Beauty is perhaps the fiercest Disney villain of them all (though I am willing to hear arguments of Ursula being as fierce if not more so.) Elle Fanning as Aurora makes complete sense as well, with all her sweet, wide-eyed innocence. All throughout the casting and filming of this movie I knew it was going to be visually amazing, but it’s not until this teaser trailer was released this week that it was revealed just how stunning this movie is going to be. The execution of Angelina’s version of Maleficent is the perfect mix of camp horror and Gothic sexuality, right where it needs to be. Her movements and her outward appearance have all the characteristics of a predator – rapid movement, night vision, complete stillness as she lures her prey in and Elle is the innocent unwitting prey, as drawn to this darkness as the witch is to her light. Elle’s blonde-haired, blue-eyed maiden and Angelina’s cheek-boned, arched-browed witch are two of the archetypal goddesses. These ancient characters are two sides of the same coin and like all opposites are attracted to each other as a means of destruction of the other. Oh and also, for reference sake, I know I’ve been saying this for 15 years now, but HHNNNGHHH ANGELINA.
