In ancient Greek theatre, comedy and tragedy masks were used so that one actor could play many roles, the masks helped the audience differentiate between roles. What a perfect metaphor for Walter White, who is one man playing many roles, whose pathos is what has guided us as an audience for the duration of the series. Walt manically laughs himself into Heisenberg, then weeps himself into some sort of Heisenberg monster (and just in time for Halloween!). What we’re left with is one man who has so many characters stuffed inside him and so little time to see this comic tragedy to its end.

The bad news? There are only four episodes of Breaking Bad left. (Sob!) The good news? This week’s EW is all about AMC’s addictive drama. Says creator Vince Gilligan:
“There are going to be a lot of holy s—! moments. Buckle up. And gird your loins. Because we’re not going out with a whimper.”

Watching Junior gather Walt in his arms in an impetuous hug upset my own desire to see Walt brought to justice. If a man who has done so much wrong can still be so wholly loved by someone as good and sweet as Walt Jr, isn’t there a chance for salvation? Or, since the man Walt presents to Junior is such a complete fraud, am I just falling for that affable, humble dad shtick that Walt puts on when he talks to his son? He’s such an amazing actor that, even with full knowledge of the dichotomy of Walter White, I still want him to be able to share a late night talk with his son; hold his daughter; pour his wife a drink; beat cancer. He’s the villain we root for, which makes him the ultimate villain. There is nothing more dangerous than a cruel man who can invoke empathy.
