From X-Files to The Killing: beautiful ‘ships floating in the waters of so-so TV shows by Suicide Blonde

In 1995,  after watching my first episode of The X-Files, I walked into school the next day in a distracted haze. I was wrought with one question and only one person I knew could answer it. I found the girl in my English class who had been watching the show all season and desperately asked her “they’ve kissed already, right?!”  She smiled in an equally crazed way and answered “No! That’s the whole thing!” Say what you want about alien conspiracies and smoking men, but when it came down to it, this unresolved sexual tension, this UST, was the whole thing when it came to The X-Files.

After we finished watching last night’s episode of The Killing I screamed out a curse upon Veena Sud, the creator and head writer of the show. Before I go any further, I need to definitely say that The Killing, as a procedural, is horrible. Its pattern of weekly red herrings, of ending each show with “THIS IS THE MURDERER!” and the start of the next show being “THIS IS TOTALLY NOT THE MURDERER!” is disrespectful to the audience’s intellect in its complete lack of realism. What makes these crime show tropes even more evident though is the beautiful and nuanced acting by Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman. These two rising film stars acting amongst cliche story lines it like putting a sparkling diamond amongst dog turds. The diamond shines bright but it’s difficult to ignore the smell of shit.

This season, though, Veena Sud decided to pull a dirty trick. It’s well known now that the rising romantic tension between two characters, be it between two people of the same or opposite gender, is a sure fire way to hook a core audience. The secret is out about ‘shippers and our rabid devotion. This is a long standing fact, going back to the 80′s, that people will stay with a show, despite its central premise’s quality, solely to see the will-they-or-won’t-they play out to any kind of conclusion. This is what kept people with The X-Files until it was meandering into complete ridiculousness. It’s what’s kept Bones highly rated and renewed season after season. The examples are endless.
