Philip Seymour Hoffman & Joaquin Phoenix play so beautifully off each other in The Master, it’s as if they were meant to star side-by-side in a heartbreaking film that made me not want to shout, but softly whisper, “Kiss him.” It feels strange to call their performances career-defining, because both men have already proved their worth & importance in the film community in previous performances, but watching the two of them together was an experience - outstanding, breath-taking performances by both men, and Amy Adams as well. Paul Thomas Anderson, as both writer & director, lives up to the title - he’s a master.
